Racing in Paradise at the Agnes Water Triathlon

Picture this: the sun is rising over Agnes Main Beach, painting the sky in golden hues. You hear the start horn blasting through the air and you dive into the water alongside your fellow athletes—taking on a challenge you’ve been training for over many months, or perhaps one you only recently built up the courage to tackle.

That raw, exhilarating feeling as your body hits the ocean is what it’s all about. If we are blessed with the same conditions as the last few years, you’ll be carving through crystal-clear, sparkly water at a perfect 24°C, returning to golden sands where a passionate crowd of locals and visitors is cheering your name as you head into transition to tackle the bike leg and finish strong on the run.

This is the Agnes Water Triathlon—and on October 3–4, 2026, it’s returning for another weekend of pure sweat, excitement, community spirit, and (hopefully!) no blisters on the Discovery Coast.

Since 2003, this volunteer-run, non-profit event has held a special place on the regional sporting calendar. It bridges the gap between high-level athletic competition and pure community fun. For serious triathletes, the Sprint distance (750m swim, 20km cycle, 5km run) provides a fast, high-intensity benchmark run and a technical open-ocean surf start—making it the ideal tune-up before massive end-of-season blockbusters.

For first-timers, casual racers, or social groups, the Enticer distance (375m swim, 10km cycle, 2.5km run) is a stress-free taste of the sport. You don’t need fancy carbon-fiber gear; participants have completed this course on mountain bikes and beach cruisers wearing a simple pair of runners! You can even grab two mates, split the legs, and form a relay team where the hardest task is simply deciding who has to do the run. Relay options are available for both the Enticer and Sprint distances.

What makes this course uniquely beautiful is how it unlocks hidden pockets of our town that tourists rarely see:

  • The Swim: An open-ocean start at Main Beach supported by the local Surf Life Saving Club, giving open-water swimmers a true technical edge.
  • The Cycle: A smooth, scenic ride taking competitors down a peaceful rural road tucked away from main traffic.
  • The Run: A leg-burning finale along a quiet section of coastal suburbia, weaving through local streets.

The true soul of the Agnes Tri is the community story that unfolds year after year. It’s an intimate, deeply personal weekend where familiar faces return constantly—and it’s built an incredible family legacy.

Parents who used to travel here to race in the main event started bringing their young kids along to cheer from the sidelines. Naturally, those children wanted to join the action, entering Saturday’s Junior Aquathlon (catering to U7, U10, and U14 age groups). Now, years later, kids who started out paddling in the junior events have grown up and are lining up on Sunday morning alongside their parents to take on the full Sprint course!

Saturday’s Junior Aquathlon is one of the most heartwarming days on the local calendar. It’s built around stepping out of comfort zones and celebrating effort over outcome. To keep it fun and inclusive, the major prizes—brand-new mountain bikes—aren’t reserved for the fastest across the line; they are drawn as random lucky door prizes for anyone who completes the course, ensuring every single child feels part of the celebration.

Because this entire weekend is organised by dedicated volunteers, the energy around Tom Jeffery Memorial Park is electric, welcoming, and relaxed.

The park hub transforms into a buzzing area where you can set up a camp chair, grab a hot brew from a local coffee van, or pick up a classic sausage sizzle. Spectators line Agnes Street, while guests staying at nearby accommodation like The Beach Club or Sandcastles can cheer the runners on right from their private balconies! While local bragging rights and prize money for the “Local Legend” category are fiercely contested, every athlete gets a hero’s welcome at the finish chute.
