Ward's Brewery

Local Brew, Global Taste: Ward’s Brewery Raising the Bar

Let’s talk beer. But not just any beer, we’re talking Ward’s Brewery in Gladstone. This isn’t your run-of-the-mill watering hole, oh no. It’s where history, flavour, and community spirit all come together in every frothy glass. And the best part? It’s only 1.5 hours from Agnes Water & 1770,  making it the perfect day trip, or a tasty stopover if you’re road-tripping the East Coast.

Now, a little backstory. The brains behind the brews is Michael Comley, a Gladstone local who’s been championing the Discovery Coast since the 1980s. He took Gladstone’s history Cordial Factory (it started life as a cordial factory back in 1917) and transformed it into a buzzing Brewpub where past meets present. And with head brewer Paul Bergamini bringing the magic to the taps, it didn’t take long for Ward’s to make its mark — collecting 23 medals in just 3 years, including shiny Gold and Silver at the 2025 Australian International Beer Awards. Not bad, hey?

So, what’s pouring? You’ve got your classics — the crisp Pale Ale, the smooth Black Lager — plus some fun experiments like Mango & Raspberry Beer and a zesty Ginger Beer. And rumour has it, a special 1770/Aggie brew might be on the way. (We’ll drink to that.)

But let’s not stop at the beer. Ward’s is also all about food and good times.

Wednesday nights are all about Moo to Brew — a paddock-to-plate feast starring local Brangus beef, cooked to perfection, and paired with a Black Lager or glass of Tempranillo.

Friday nights? There’s always something going down. Gigs, comedy shows and guest food trucks. Last Friday of the month is Ward’s Own Beer Battered Fish & Chips – wrapped in paper. Check their socials to see what’s on.

And if you can’t get to Gladstone straight away, don’t worry — Ward’s beers are also flowing at Drift & Wood Restaurant right here in Agnes Water.

But honestly, if you’ve got the time, take the trip. Michael himself often hosts the Brewpub Tours, and his passion for local history, small business collaboration, and the Discovery Coast is infectious. You’ll leave with more than just a good beer buzz, you’ll leave with a story to tell.

So there you have it. Ward’s Brewery isn’t just a place to grab a drink, it’s an experience worth raising a glass to. Whether you’re on holiday in Agnes Water & 1770 or cruising the East Coast, this little gem deserves a spot on your itinerary. Cheers to that!
